SUSAN'S TIPS - FALL/WINTER 2007

Every few months or so, fashionistas the nation over encounter a ‘transition’ season.  This is simply defined as the time between seasons when weather is unpredictable, fashion rules aren’t so black and white, and even the most knowledgeable girls wonder what to wear.

Never one to dodge an issue, I’ll offer some advice to perhaps help out this particular season – if I’m really good you can actually remember some things for future ones as well.  The key, in my humble opinion, to looking stylish during any transitional season is to consider layers.  While I was never on the twinset bandwagon so popularized primarily by the business casual set, I concede it had definite practical reasons and its reign (chokehold) was certainly not without merit.

Let’s fast forward to 2007 and take that same principle but with a few updates.  On a chilly morning a fleece pullover may seem perfect, but when the afternoon sun warms up to, say, 70 degrees or even more, that same pullover is downright suffocating.  Easy answer?  Of course; opt for a super-cute outfit that consists of a lightweight top (a tee shirt or tank even).  Then throw on a simple – but equally as cute – jacket that can double as part of your outfit.  Voila, take off the jacket and you actually look better than with it on – who knew?!

Dress up your denim with fabulous jewelry, and think jewel tones for this time of year.  Amethyst, aquamarine, citrines and smoky quartz are all perfect for late summer/early fall.  Lay off the crystals and pink quartz for awhile; they will seem wonderfully fresh come resort, and are better left in general for summertime.

And while it’s much too soon for velvets, cashmere, and suede, do consider the extremely fashionable and always appropriate cottons, jersey knits, and silk.  Put away the linens and bright white shoes for a while – don’t be tempted to wear them even though the mercury may rise high enough for an afternoon of swimming.  Bermuda shorts and cigarette pants are just perfect, and it’s easy to stay (and look) cool with a smart pair of sandals and sunglasses.

Remember, the best thing you can do this season is enjoy it!  Timing mistakes and bad judgment are part of even the most discriminating woman’s fashion life – laugh it off and with any luck you might even discover a friend out there imitating your bold and daring fashion-forward attitude!
